Where can I buy a small Wankel Rotary Engine?

I want a small-displacement Dorito spinner. I want to take it apart and put it back together. Does any company sell a rotary engine, preferably of a displacement less than one liter, as an off-the-shelf item? I want one.

If there’s one with high-strength components that can handle boost, I will choose that one. It will be glorious.

Aixro makes small rotary engines, but they aren’t exactly cheap. http://www.aixro.co.uk/

These guys make them, but seem kind of fly-by-night. Good luck actually getting one:

You can get RX-8's that are throwing codes for like $3k right now. Pull the engine and sell the rolling shell to someone looking for to do an LS-swap with it might be the closest thing short of just buying an old 12A on a pallet on eBay.

how small? there’s seat belt pre-tensioners that use a rotary system:

Now I’m wondering why they never made a rotary powered moped.

If you want something you can use and boost, “cheap” and “rotary” do not belong in the same sentence. If you want something to strip down to see how it works and put back together just buy a trashed RX-8 engine and try it out. If you want to use it.... Be warned, most rotary engine builders strongly encourage new rotor housings because if the engine went the sides are likely scored. They also say you shouldn’t expect the first rotary you build to last more than 15k miles. I’ve considered this too (RX8 owner) but the cost of the mechanical knowledge is higher than if I had to buy a single engine. Mine - mercifully - is in excellent shape compression-wise for the time being.

I think there’s a company that makes ‘em for model airplanes but I can’t remember the name.

Check out old snowmobiles. They shoved rotaries in quite a few, from Arctic Cat to John Deer.

Maybe a dumb question, but is it possible to get the sides machined flat again, or does the shape of the casting make that impossible?

I think the general line of thought is its easier, more consistent and competitive price-wise to buy new housings instead of getting them lapped.

Not sure if I’m too late to this party to help, but Freedom Motors ( https://freedom-motors.com/freedom_rotapower.html ), Rotron ( https://www.nwuav.com/engines-rotron.html )and Advanced Innovations ( https://www.aieuk.com/40s-5bhp-wankel-rotary-engine/ ) all make small rotaries. There’s also talk of this guy making his 29,000RPM rotary available for purchase:
